Syndication

In this episode the Spanish decide to flee the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. The ensuing midnight battle nearly crushes them. Those left behind are sacrificed. Later, Cuitlahuac looks for allies among the surrounding cities, as does Cortes.

Cortes's native allies have gotten some scorn for joining him, so I spend a moment considering the legacy they left behind.

Near the end of the episode, two of the most important factors that decided Tenochtitlan's fate are set into motion.

Many great civilizations have fallen mysteriously, the causes unknown. That's not the case with Tenochtitlan. In episode 1 a city is invaded, an emperor is taken hostage, and Tenochtitlan's last days of peace fade into the past.
